3 Ways to Read a Book

We have been working on what is looks like to be a reader.  Here are some of our options...

Here are some ways to reread a book...

Heartprints

We read the book Heartprints this week and talked about how we could spread kindness and friendship to others.  We are focusing on being a team here at school and taking care of each other.  A copy of the poster below will be in our classroom to help remind students about the impact they have on their friends.

We Won't Let our Books Cry!

This week, we spent a lot of time talking about how to care for books. I read the book Library Dragon by Carmen Ann Deedy. I introduced students to the Book Hospital for those books that need a little TLC. We practiced putting books away the right way. We also talked about books that cry. Books that cry might include books that are put away incorrectly, books that are torn, books that have been destroyed, books that are left out on the floor etc. Our goal is to keep our books happy by taking care of them.  Here a song we learned to help us remember how important it is to take care of our books!

Curriculum Night

Thank you for joining me on Thursday night for Curriculum Night.  For those families who were unable to attend I have attached my presentation.  The paperwork from that evening went home with students today.  The presentation has bullet point of the basics and needed to be saved as a PDF document to the links for things such as our blog and Schoology will not function so, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!  You all have amazing children and it is a joy to work with them each day!!

E-STEM Festival

E-STEM Festival
We are excited to announce our First Annual E-STEM Festival that will take place on Thursday, September 26th AND Friday, September 27th. Your child will be spending much of those two days outdoors learning through the context of E-STEM skills. (Environmental Education, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Highlights of the day will include visits from naturalists from the Richardson Nature Center and The Works Museum. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Layers are best (t-shirt, sweatshirt and/or jacket). Tennis shoes are a must. Crocs, flip flops or sandals are not conducive to the activities your child will be a part of. Students should also bring a reusable water bottle they can carry throughout the day. This event will go on rain or shine. Students and staff are very excited to partake in our special two-day event!

Volunteers Needed

On the second day of our E-STEM Festival, September 27th (Friday), we are in need of many volunteers.  You can help for the whole day, or just ½ a day.    Volunteers will help facilitate small group activities taught by The Works.  If you would like to help, please sign-up using the following link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C48AFA62DA57-estem

I Read, What Is Your Super Power?
Have you heard about Glendale's primary fundraiser?  The Glendale Read-a-thon is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9th; this is when each student at Glendale will read for 120 minutes during the day.  Prior to this day, students are encouraged to collect pledges for their reading efforts.  The Read-a-thon committee is looking for volunteers to help with two different activities that make our Read-a-thon a success:

1)  Friday, September 20th is the Read-a-thon kick-off meeting. We are looking for 8-10 volunteers to help at the all school meeting. Volunteers will arrive between 9-9:30 and will be done by 10:30am. You can sign up through the attached Sign Up Genius link:

2)  Tuesday, October 1st is Kindergarten-2nd Grade Read-a-thon Sign up. We are looking for 12 volunteers to help sign the Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes up for each classroom they will be reading in during the Read-a-thon (on October 9th). You can volunteer through the attached Sign Up Genius link.

The Glendale BUZZ BOOK
Plan play dates, sleepovers, parties, etc…Don’t forget to sign up for the “Buzz Book”; Glendale’s student directory!   The link will be available until October 1st, 2013.  We would like the “Buzz Book” to be available for pick-up and e-delivery by October 11, 2013.

The link above also includes PTC volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. When completing the on-line form please mark any event that you would like to be personally notified about throughout the year. By marking an event, you are agreeing to an email from the PTC inquiring if you're interested in volunteering. It does not hold you accountable to volunteer for that event - we will still verify that you are interested & available. Thank you in advance for your help!

Homework for the first 2 weeks

1. First, next week we will start talking about the love of books. We are asking each parent to take a photo of their child reading in his/her favorite home reading spot. This can be again in their bedroom, a comfy chair, on the floor etc.  I would like this photo to come to school no later than Thursday.

2. To help kick off reading, we will be talking about our “Forever Books.” These are books that have a special meaning to us and will stay in our memories forever. This book can be any of your child’s favorites and may even have a special story behind it. By Friday, September 6 please send in this special book. We will use the book some lessons and return it to you the following week. Please make sure the book is labeled with your child’s name so we are sure it gets back home safely!
Blue Book with Smiley Face

3. The fruit request in the planners in for the Friendship Fruit Salad which is explained in a previous post.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have questions.

Brown Bear School Tour

On Monday we took a tour of the school and read our own book called Brown Bear School Tour. This story has no audio. Your are welcome to have your child read this aloud on their own or you can partner with your child and read this together, all while revisiting the many places we went today. We had a very busy day. Traditionally, the first week of school is a lot of going over basics. This week we have added school supplies to our schedule and have been working on building our daily routines and expectations.

Planners and Monday Folders

Monday Folders will be coming home on Tuesday for this week only. This is a green folder. Please take time that evening to empty the folder. Please return the folder empty on Tuesday (this week it will be Wednesday).

Binders and Planners came home today and should come back to school every day as students will write in their planners daily. Please take time to look at your child's binders and planners each evening. You do not have to sign the planners.

I have also included a blue or red folder in your child's three ring binder.  If you have information that needs to come to school such as lunch money, a note about transportation or homework to return, that can be placed in the folder on the side labeled "Information for Miss Halvorson."  I will also send any information home that is not in the Monday folder on the side labeled "Information for Home."  Please check this folder along with the planner each night.  I will be working with the kids in the morning to get into the habit of checking this folder for any information.

Friendship Fruit Salad on Tuesday

We have been talking a lot about how to be a good friend both in and out of school.  We know that making friendly choices is an important job in first grade.  To help illustrate this point I would like to make a friendship salad with the students.  For each fruit we add to our salad we will talk about another way we can be a good friend.  I would really appreciate it if you could donate a fruit and send it in with your student on Tuesday.   Any fruit will do please just make sure if it is a fruit that needs to be cut, skinned, washed etc. it is ready to go before it gets to school.  Please also keep in mind that the fruit will be added into a salad for everyone to enjoy so we want to make sure we have enough.  I will have a surprise ingredient to add to the salad, so you can ask your students about that on Tuesday night!!
